Report: Red Bull Mulling to Build Road Cars with the Help of Infiniti

Enzo Ferrari didn’t initially intend to manufacture road cars when he started his Scuderia Ferrari team in 1928. It wasn’t until almost two decades later, in 1947, that the first road car bearing the prancing horse, the V12 125S, was produced mainly to finance his team’s racing activities.

Ferrucio Lamborghini founded Lamborghini Trattori in 1948, a successful manufacturer of tractors and other agricultural equipment. In 1959, he opened an oil heater factory, and later started producing air conditioning equipment. Naturally, he became very wealthy.

Would You or Wouldn’t You: Fiero-Based Lamborghini Diablo Replica with BMW V12 Power

If a Fiero-based Ferrari replica is a “Fierrari”, then I figure its Lamborghini equivalent must be a “Lambieroghini”. Here’s one such monstrosity for sale on eBay, though on closer inspection there’s a lot to like about it.

For one, though it’s incomplete, much of the grunt work has already been done. The unpainted fibreglass body that replicates the Diablo VT 6.0's styling has been mated to the tubular steel frame and the gas door struts, power window motors and headlights have all been installed.

Also, the brake rotors are from a Corvette and the wheels are genuine 2004 Lamborghini Murciélago 18-inch stock clad in Pirelli P-Zero rubber.

Video: Witness the Birth of a Lamborghini Aventador

We’ve already shown you our fair share of Aventador videos including films of Lamborghini’s top dog being assembled in a museum, tearing up the Vallelunga race track and even a virtual promo clip. But truth is, we never get tired of checking out Lamborghini’s newest supercar, if not in the flesh, then at least on video. And we imagine neither do you.

The newest film to come out from Sant’ Agata shows the entire process of the Aventador’s conception - from a sketch on paper through CAD models and the stitching of leather by hand, to the assembly of the fabulous V12 and the honing of the carbonfibre parts… But let’s not say anymore – just follow the jump and watch it for yourself.

Plastic is Fantastic: 1:24 Scale Supercar Exotics Encased In Resin

Here’s something you don’t see every day: a 1970's style resin “sculpture” made by an unknown French artist and featuring various 1:24 scale Ferraris.

There’s also a Lamborghini Diablo, Jaguar XJ220 and Bugatti EB110 in there among others. Props to anyone who can help us identify the rest. The unusual item is being sold by Mantiques Modern [sic] of New York.

For details on price, you’ll have to contact the dealer, but something tells us it won’t be cheap… More photos of the artsy piece in the gallery after the break.

Go-Fast Porsche Cayman Driver Smacks Ferrari 360 at Supercar Gathering in Malaysia

A couple of mishaps involving private supercars marked this past weekend’s 2011 SuperGT race at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia.

The first incident occurred on the tarmac during a parade of sports and super cars when an overly enthusiastic but sloppy driver of a winged Porsche Cayman rear-ended a Ferrari 360 as it slowed down in front of the crowd. The red Ferrari then bumped into a silver Ferrari California that was in front of it. You’ll have to jump 52 seconds into the first video to see the very expensive fender benders.

The second mishap took place outside the track as the supercars were leaving. It involved a kitted-out Lamborghini Murcielago and a BMW M5. An eyewitness told Jalopnik that he saw the Murcielago and an BMW M5 chasing each other before the crash. You can see what happened to the Lambo in the video after the break.

http://carscameraschronicillness.blogspot.com/ is his blog, he's hailing from Australia, and the first thing you begin to wonder about is the title, what is the chronic illness? Gastroparesis, which is essentially the stomach muscles being partially paralysed and unable to move food through properly, caused by a food poisoning 11 years ago. Not good, bit of an understatement.

World Car Awards finalists

Sixty-six jurors from across the world have completed a first round of voting to determine the 2011 World Car Awards finalists.

With four different awards up for grabs, the shortlist models - in alphabetical order - are:

2011 World Car of the Year

  • Audi A1

  • Audi A8

  • BMW 5 Series

  • BMW X3

  • Jaguar XJ

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee

  • Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

  • Nissan Leaf

  • Porsche Cayenne

  • Volvo S60 / V60

Obviously, this is the big prize. Each of the finalists will be judged on ‘overall merit, value, safety, environmental responsibility, emotional appeal and significance’, a combination that has lead to some previous winners being very worthy but also just a bit dull.

What’s striking is that 2011’s entire crop is from premium or, in the case of the Volvo and Jeep, semi-premium manufacturers. Even the Nissan isn’t exactly mainstream, given its relatively high price.

The Leaf could well repeat its 2011 European Car of the Year victory, but it does tend to divide opinion. There are those who believe it almost makes petrol or diesel cars obsolete, while others won’t back an all-electric car until both battery range and the recharging infrastructure improve.

It’s hard to see either the SLS AMG or Cayenne winning, given their comparative lack of environmental responsibility. The BMW 5 Series has to be a contender given its all-round ability, but it would be good to see the Jaguar XJ clinch it, simply because it represents such a brave departure from previous generation XJ models.

Audi’s A1 probably ticks all the boxes. However, it’d be a shame for it to win because it’s essentially a tarted-up version of last year’s World Car of the Year, the Volkswagen Polo.

2011 World Performance Car

  • Aston Martin Rapide

  • Audi RS 5 Coupe

  • Cadillac CTS-V Coupe

  • Ferrari 458 Italia

  • Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera

  • Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG / CL 63 AMG

  • Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

  • Porsche 911 GT2 RS

  • Porsche 911 Turbo

  • Renault Mégane Renaultsport 250

This category is wide open, as it includes everything from a compact hot hatch to numerous supercars for the jurors to choose from. Audi has won the performance car award three times in the past five years, but it’ll be a surprise if the feat is repeated with the RS 5.

2011 World Car Design of the Year

  • Alfa Romeo Giulietta

  • Aston Martin Rapide

  • Audi A7

  • Citroën DS3

  • Ferrari 458

  • Honda CR-Z

  • Kia Sportage

  • Nissan Juke

There were originally fifty-one candidates in this category, which is expected to ‘highlight new vehicles with innovation and style that push established boundaries’ - a demanding set of criteria.

On that basis, the Aston Martin would seem to be a strong challenger, but arguably it’s the Nissan Juke that truly stands out as a unique design.

The shortlist was decided by a panel of five design experts but, as with all of the other awards, it’s now solely up to the jurors to arrive at a winner.

2011 World Green Car

  • BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition

  • Chevrolet Volt

  • Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

  • Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell

  • Nissan Leaf

  • Smart electric drive

Three environmental experts were asked to draw up the finalists for this award based on emissions, fuel consumption and the power plant technology employed.

Perhaps the Leaf stands a stronger chance of winning this category, but it may be the case that more jurors consider the Volt’s range extender concept as being more practical for everyday use.

But with its 109 g/km and combined cycle 68.9 mpg (4.0 l/100km), the 320d Efficient Dynamics Edition proves that cars with a traditional internal combustion engine can still be impressively green.

The next stage is that during February the jurors will vote again, but this time just on the finalists.

Following that ballot, the top three cars in each category will be announced at the Geneva International Motor Show on 1st March.

Then, bringing the process to a close, the 2011 World Car Awards winners will be declared during the New York International Auto Show in April.

Gallardo Bicolore edition

Lamborghini has unveiled the Gallardo Bicolore Special Edition at the 2011 Qatar Motor Show.

Predictably, given its name, the Bicolore gets a two-tone colour scheme. Its top half including pillars, roof, engine cover and rear spoiler is finished in Noctis Black, while the lower portion comes painted in a choice of Giallo Midas, Arancio Borealis, Grigio Telesto, Bianco Monocerus or Blu Caelum. In other words, yellow, orange, grey, white or blue.

The exterior effect is finished off by titanium grey enamel, 15-spoke Skorpius forged alloy wheels. Meanwhile, it’s a similar theme on the inside, where the Bicolore is upholstered in Persus Black leather with contrast stitching to match the paintjob. As a final touch, the centre console bezel surrounding the standard-fit e-gear automated transmission controls is also Noctis Black, to match the upper section of the bodywork.

European and Asian-Pacific markets will get the Gallardo Bicolore Special Edition in LP 560-4 guise, which means 552 bhp (412 kW / 560 PS), all-wheel drive, a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 201 mph (325 km/h).

For some unexplained reason, the Bicolore will only be available to North American customers as an LP 550-2 which, as the nomenclature suggests, loses 9 bhp (7 kW / 10 PS) and is rear-wheel drive only.

Lamborghini has yet to confirm prices.

Green Car Awards 2010

The Environmental Transport Association (ETA), a UK-based ethical motoring organisation and sustainable travel lobby group, has announced its 2010 Green Car Awards winners.

BMW took the honours in three of the nine categories. Toyota meanwhile won in two, plus its iQ was given the accolade of overall Green Car of the Year 2010. In deciding how the titles would be awarded, over 5,000 cars were assessed on their power, emissions, fuel efficiency and amount of noise produced.

The worst cars in each category were also named, with the Lamborghini Murcielago being declared the least-green car overall. Perhaps the LP 640’s 495 g/km of carbon dioxide emissions and combined cycle fuel consumption of 13.3 mpg (21.3 l/100 km) had something to do with it?

Some of the results seem a bit odd, though. For example, the winning Toyota iQ (presumably the entry level 1.0 VVT-i Manual) seems to be bettered in a number of key criteria by the car that (possibly) inspired it - the Smart fortwo.

According to the ETA’s own data, this is how the iQ compares to the diesel-engined fortwo:

Measure iQ 1.0 VVT-i fortwo cdi turbodiesel coupé
Combined cycle consumption 4.3 l/100km / 65.7 mpg 3.3 l/100km / 85.6 mpg
Fuel cost over 12,000 miles £930 £720
CO2 g/km 99 88*
Carbon monoxide g/km 0.15 0.174
Hydrocarbons g/km 0.03 0.246**
Oxides of nitrogen g/km 0.02 0.224
Particulates g/km N/A 0.021

* Smart actually quotes 86 g/km.

** Figure is combined hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen.

On the basis of those figures, the Smart would appear to be the much ‘greener’ car, unless the extra hydrocarbons and particulates its diesel engine produces are considered really harmful? However, there were plenty of other diesel cars that won their categories, so it would seem that argument doesn’t really stand up.

Apart from that, there are some models mentioned that are no longer produced (for instance the V6-powered Volkswagen Golf and the AMG version of Mercedes-Benz’s R-Class). And it seems that the greenest off-roader prize has gone to the whole of the BMW X1 range, rather than an individual model. Notwithstanding the issue that anyone contemplating taking an X1 off-road would need to be very adventurous (and have a proper off-roader on standby to rescue them shortly afterwards), there’s quite a difference in fuel consumption and emissions between the rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions.

So, perhaps the results need to be viewed with a degree of circumspection but, for what it’s worth, here is the list of the ETA Green Car Awards 2010 winners and losers:

Audi R8 GT

The Audi R8 family continues to grow. First of all there was the V8- powered car, which was soon joined by the R8 V10 and Spyder. And now there’s the R8 GT.

Based on the V10, but more powerful and lighter, the GT is aimed directly at the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera. The 5.2 litre engine has been up-rated to 553 bhp (412 kW / 560 PS), while a strict diet has dropped the weight by around 100 kg.

As a result, the R8 GT accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 320 km/h (199 mph). That’s actually not much of an improvement on the standard V10, which does 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and goes onto 196 mph.

But it would have been embarrassing had the R8 ended up outpacing its very close cousin, the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera, which takes 3.4 seconds to do the 0-100 km/h sprint and tops out at 202 mph.

Changes to the chassis should mean the R8 GT is able to use its enhanced power to best effect though, particularly on track days. Taking inspiration from the R8 LMS racer, the GT features manually adjustable coilover suspension with higher front and rear wheel camber rates to sharpen the handling. Carbon fibre ceramic brake disks are standard, and the 19” forged wheels can be shod with Cup tyres which, Audi says, ‘offer the ultimate in performance on dry roads’ (i.e. they’re probably semi-slicks that are useless in the wet).

When rumours first started circulating about the R8 GT, some thought it might also replicate the rear-wheel drive of the R8 LMS. But the quattro all-wheel drive system remains, albeit with only 15% of the engine’s power going to the front wheels under normal driving conditions, increasing to 30% if necessary.

A rear axle mechanical locking differential further improves traction, providing up to 25% lockup under acceleration and up to 40% on the overrun. The electronic traction control has been specially tuned, and a Sport mode allows ‘spectacular, but safe, oversteer when accelerating out of a corner’. The system can even be switched off altogether. Gear changes in the R8 GT are handled by the 'R tronic' sequential manual transmission.

However, it remains that anyone wanting a purely rear-wheel drive R8 is either going to have to hope that Audi eventually produces one, or alternatively consider the R8 GT3-2 from tuners MTM.

Visually, the R8 GT is distinguished by the carbon fibre-reinforced plastic rear hatch, rear bumper and side blades. The front splitter has a double lip and is made of carbon fibre, while curved elements at the corners of the nose increase downforce on the front axle. Aerodynamics at the rear are taken care of by a fixed wing made of matte carbon fibre.

For those owners wishing to do track days, or even compete in their R8 GT, an optional race package is available. It includes a bolt-in roll bar, four-point seat belts, a fire extinguisher and a battery kill switch. An additional front bar module turns the roll bar into a full cage.

Production of the R8 GT will be limited to 333 units, of which 33 are coming to the UK. It’s expected to cost about £40,000 more than the £103,810 Audi charges for a standard R8 V10 with manual transmission.

That’s a massive premium, which could almost buy a TT RS Coupé instead, but even so it’s doubtful Audi UK will have much trouble selling its allocation.

RWD Audi R8

Audi already builds a rear-wheel drive version of the R8, the GT3. But, as the name suggests, it’s made solely for GT racing and therefore only available to race teams. All road-going editions of Audi’s flagship model, perhaps understandably, feature the company’s signature quattro all-wheel drive technology.

But now German tuner MTM has announced its GT3-2. The clue to what differentiates it from a standard R8 is that final ‘2’. Yes, half the quattro system has been ditched in order to create the only street legal rear-wheel drive R8.

However, MTM hasn’t stopped there. The 4.2 litre FSI V8 engine gets a supercharger, boosting power by 146 bhp to 560 bhp. Significantly, that’s more than the 518 bhp produced by Audi’s own R8 V10.

That kind of power allows the GT3-2 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 317 km/h (197 mph). Strangely enough, those figures are virtually identical to what the Audi R8 V10 and its close relative, the rear-wheel drive Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2, can achieve.

To keep the increased performance in check, MTM provides the GT3-2 with adjustable suspension and ventilated brakes. The 20” wheels are MTM forged items, shod with Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres.

Visually, the changes are fairly subtle - graphics aside - with the carbon fibre front spoiler, side skirts and rear wing all there purely to ensure better air flow.

For any existing owners who might be tempted by the idea of rear-wheel drive, the MTM conversion can also be applied to a used R8.

Lamborghini Murcielago Successor

The development of a successor to the Murciélago has been widely speculated in the motoring press, as the supercar approaches the end of its first decade in production. Spy photos published on the internet in January 2010 showed a camouflaged Lamborghini prototype undergoing winter testing.Early rumors suggest the possibility of the name "Jota", a reference to the one-off Miura variant created by
